2026 Claire Peasnall prize awarded
Jane Frederick wins this year's prize for garden focussed project
Jane applied for this year's prize to enable her to undertake research and development that reimagines formal gardens as living metaphors for change and renewal.
She says "Britain's formal Baroque gardens are sites where our desire for control over nature, and fear of its loss, coexist. Once symbols of human dominion, historical Baroque gardens now appear vulnerable, slowly yielding to time."
Jane will use her award to visit five gardens in England and Wales, feeding into her explorative painting and drawing practice. Her plan is also to introduce new upholstery techniques and recycled materials into her work, enabling her to experiment with three dimensional structures "merging rigid geometry with pliable frameworks".
