Artists Respond 2020 - Ruth Pigott
Designer Ruth Pigott (Curiosity Creators) from Gainsborough was one of our first Artists Respond Award recipients in 2020. Here, she reflects on some of the things she got up to with support from the St Hugh's Foundation for the Arts.
Ruth wanted to use her Artists Respond award to put together a collection of samples that she could draw on when looking at designs in the future, including for puppets, props and costuming for theatre and outdoor events.
Following a slower than hoped for start, due to the impact of further lockdowns at the beginning of 2021 and needing to get back into the routine of family members studying from home, Ruth’s progress on her sample library came on in leaps and bounds. She describes:
“I planned out the project until the end of March 2021. I made lists of the different techniques and processes that I wanted to make and record.
So far I’ve been able to do some additional training. This includes film making, with the intention of making mini films to play with the movement of my samples and also to be able to share some of the work online."

"I’m currently looking into the various ways to make moving joints for figures. From traditional to more experimental.
I have created a series of reels on Instagram showing my work-in-progress and to practice making simple films.
I have really loved being able to get into this now and having the time to follow my thoughts. The support from the St Hugh’s Foundation for the Arts has given me time to experiment without needing to know what my end game would be. It has given me a moment to break the cycle of working job to job, commission to commission, and to nurture my practice.”
